7th Graders Researching the "future of food" with cooked cricket street tacos, cricket brownies, and even some chocolate chirp cookies.
7th graders at WCMS have been researching the "future of food" in language arts as part of their People and the Planet Unit. Topics of interest included plant-based meats, insect protein, vertical farms, and urban farms. With the help of Mr. Smith's FACS class, students were able to get some hands-on experience cooking with plant-based meats and insect protein. Plant-based teriyaki meatballs and chicken tenders were prepared alongside cricket street tacos, cricket brownies, and even some chocolate chirp cookies. Kiren Rushton and Evan Myers acted as two brave taste-testers sampling some crickets cooked in olive oil and seasoned with chili-lime salt. It was quite the successful cooking experiment, and gave students some much needed context to help write their CER's about which "future of food" trend offers us the greatest potential in the future.
